From Dreams to Reality: How SBS Training Transformed Grace Nabulo’s Life

Written by: Lilian Nansubuga

For years, Grace Nabulo watched her businesses struggle. She worked hard, invested what little she had, and hoped each new idea would succeed—but the profits never came.

“I always wanted to know why my business failed,” Grace shares. “I would invest and not see any profits at the end of the day. Many women do business, but we do not know exactly what we are doing.”

At 47 years old and a mother of five, Grace had always dreamed of building something of her own. When women in her community told her about an upcoming Street Business School entrepreneurship training, she saw an opportunity to finally understand what it would take to grow a successful business.

Before joining SBS, Grace earned a living through frying pancakes and tailoring. While these businesses helped support her family, she lacked the skills and confidence to take them to the next level.

During the training, Grace learned practical business skills that changed the way she approached entrepreneurship. Lessons in record-keeping, planning, and stepping outside her comfort zone helped her recognize her own potential.

“I realized what I was capable of and the independence I could achieve,” Grace says.

After graduating from the SBS program, Grace approached her tailoring business with a new mindset. With greater confidence and determination, she committed to working consistently and building a business that could support her family.

To raise capital for her business, Grace made a difficult decision to sell some of her household items and invest $94.68 into her tailoring business. It was a risk, but Grace believed in the skills she had gained and was determined to create a better future for herself and her family.

With this investment, she moved beyond individual customer orders and began producing school uniforms and African fabric outfits in bulk, steadily growing her income and confidence.

Today, Grace’s tailoring business generates an average monthly profit of $135.25, with a daily income of approximately $5.41. By participating in savings groups, she has strengthened her financial stability and is now able to support her children’s education and contribute more consistently to household expenses.

But Grace’s dreams do not stop there.

She hopes to expand her tailoring business, open a tailoring school to train other women, and continue creating opportunities for herself and her family. Recently, she also purchased a plot of land where she plans to start a pig farming project—another step toward building a more secure future.

Looking back on her journey, Grace reflects on how much has changed since joining SBS.

“Most women wait for their husbands, and I also used to be one of them, but that’s not me anymore. My life is so different from how it was before I joined the SBS training. I have so much confidence now. No one can take that away from me.”

For Grace, entrepreneurship is no longer just about earning an income. It is about confidence, independence, and the ability to create the future she once only dreamed of.
