The Pieces are Coming Together for Marcelina Aceng

Marcelina Aceng has pieced together her tailoring skills, her new Street Business School business training and her life experiences to create her own pathway out of poverty. She is motivated to grow her business so she can educate her children and build a house. “I know I will make it if I continue working hard,” she says.

Having tailored for years out of her home, Marcelina had always assumed that since those around her already knew what she was doing, they would come to her. She learned a new approach via SBS by setting time aside each week to move around and find new customers as well as let her old customers know what she has in stock. She has learned to use the off-cuts from fabric to make beautiful patch-work designed bags.

Marcelina has grown her client base by implementing what she learned and has increased her income from $70 to $89. Life did not look this bright before SBS….her husband had been captured by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) rebels and she continues to support 10 children. After learning her husband had been killed from others who escaped the brutality, she started doing tailoring to feed her children. She has been doing this for over 15 years because it is the only thing she knew and did not have much of a choice.

“I was doing my business in the same way and didn’t know exactly how to improve it. Ever since I attended the SBS training, I have learned how to look for customers, listen to them and increase my profits!”

Marcelina wants to grow her business so she can continue to educate her children and build a house.
