Diana’s Journey: From Seasonal Sales to Thriving Fish Business with SBS

Diana Abua, a 34-year-old mother of two, discovered the transformative potential of entrepreneurship through the Street Business School training program. Introduced to the program by her community women representative, Diana’s life took a positive turn as she sought a more sustainable business approach.

Diana-Abua2Before joining the SBS program, Diana relied on selling seasonal items such as maize, grasshoppers, and matooke (a type of banana commonly used in East African cuisine). However, the cyclical nature of these sales posed challenges, leading to financial struggles during off-seasons. Eager for change, Diana enrolled in the SBS training.” I mostly loved the idea that we were going to be getting knowledge about how to run and sustain businesses since we had been doing businesses and had no idea about how to sustain them.”

During the training, Diana found the topic of bookkeeping particularly enlightening. This newfound knowledge opened her eyes to fresh opportunities, inspiring her to transition into a more permanent business venture.

Armed with insights gained from the SBS program, Diana conducted market research to identify the most suitable business for her. With determination and capital of $18.71 saved from her previous seasonal produce sales, she began selling fried fish. Diana sources fish in bulk from lake shores, fries it to perfection, and offers it to her customers.

Diana’s commitment to her fish-selling business has reaped significant benefits. She now has the financial means to educate her children and cover all household expenses. On successful days, her business yields a profit of $13.36.

Looking towards the future, Diana dreams of building her own house and expanding her fish-selling business by opening multiple branches. Diana expressed gratitude for the Street Business School program, “SBS helped me a lot. I am now confident in what I do, and my future is clear now.”
