Empowered to Begin: How Milly Turned Small Steps Into Big Dreams

Written by: Lilian Nansubuga

Meet Milly Nalubowa, a 32-year-old powerhouse who not only manages a small stall filled with a variety of products but also juggles the responsibilities of being a mother of two. From matooke and cassava to sweet potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, and more, Milly’s verandah-based business is a testament to her determination and resilience.

Milly’s journey into entrepreneurship started when she learned about the Street Business School (SBS) training program through the announcement made by the women’s representative. The call for a training program tailored for women resonated with Milly, igniting a spark of eagerness within her. “I was excited to learn something new and to better myself, so I signed up for the training,” Milly shared.

Her favorite takeaway from the SBS program? The empowering concept of “starting small.” This idea became Milly’s guiding light, giving her the courage to launch her small stall. To kickstart her venture, Milly wisely utilized the daily upkeep money her husband left at home, turning it into a steppingstone for her business dreams.

In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, Milly became part of a savings group, faithfully putting away $4.01 every week. This financial savvy is driven by Milly’s big dream—to own a shop and take her business to new heights.

Milly uses most of her savings to contribute towards the family’s needs and to pay for her daughter’s schooling.

“I am so happy that I am an empowered woman now; I do not have to depend on my husband for everything,” Milly proudly said.

Milly’s journey is still unfolding, but the foundation she has built is strong. What began as a small verandah stall is now a source of confidence, independence, and hope for her family.
Through discipline, saving, and the courage to start small, Milly has taken control of her future and proven that empowerment begins with belief and action. As she continues to grow her business and work toward owning her own shop, Milly’s story stands as a powerful reminder that when women are given the right tools and support, they don’t just improve their lives—they transform the futures of their families and communities.
